In a unique blend of travel and artistic exploration, the School of Athens Fine Art Academy recently organized a plein air painting session for its faculty members amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Wayanad. The team journeyed from Bangalore to Wayanad, embracing the opportunity to step outside the studio and immerse themselves in nature. The initiative was designed to strengthen observational skills, encourage creative expression, and bring fresh inspiration into their teaching practices.

The plein air experience was thoughtfully divided into two distinct sessions, each offering a different natural setting and artistic challenge. The first session was conducted along the serene riverside of the Kabani River, near the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. Surrounded by dense forest and the gentle flow of the river, the artists captured the tranquil beauty of the landscape. The reflections on water, shifting light, and rich greenery created a calming yet dynamic environment, allowing faculty members to explore depth, texture, and natural color variations in their work.

The second session took place at Muneeswaran Kunnu, a scenic hilltop known for its expansive views and mist-covered surroundings. Unlike the riverside setting, this location presented a broader perspective of Wayanad’s terrain, with rolling hills and dramatic skies. The elevated viewpoint challenged the artists to focus on composition, scale, and atmospheric perspective, resulting in a diverse range of interpretations on canvas. Plein air painting, which involves creating art directly in outdoor environments, enabled the faculty to respond spontaneously to changing light and weather conditions. This hands-on experience not only sharpened their technical skills but also deepened their connection with nature.

Faculty members described the sessions as both creatively enriching and mentally rejuvenating. The shift from indoor teaching spaces to open landscapes provided a fresh perspective, encouraging experimentation and artistic freedom.

This initiative highlights the commitment of School of Athens to continuous learning and artistic excellence. By engaging educators in real-world artistic practices, the academy ensures that its teaching remains dynamic, relevant, and deeply rooted in experience. The Wayanad plein air sessions stand as a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful artistic lessons are found beyond the classroom—where nature becomes both subject and teacher.
